Job Description/Role
Restaurant Accountant
Overview: As a Restaurant Accountant, you will play a crucial role in managing financial transactions, analyzing financial data, and ensuring compliance with accounting and tax regulations specific to the restaurant industry. Your responsibilities will involve maintaining accurate financial records, preparing financial reports, and providing strategic financial guidance to support the restaurant’s operations and growth.
Responsibilities:
Financial Reporting and Analysis:
- Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements (Profit and Loss, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow Statements).
- Monitor financial performance against budgets and forecasts.
- Provide financial analysis to support decision-making processes.
Budgeting and Forecasting:
- Assist in the preparation of annual budgets and forecasts.
- Monitor budget variances and provide explanations and corrective actions as needed.
Accounts Payable and Receivable:
- Manage accounts payable and receivable processes.
- Ensure timely payment of bills and invoices.
- Monitor and follow up on outstanding receivables.
Payroll Processing:
- Oversee payroll administration, including processing payroll, deductions, and compliance with payroll tax regulations.
- Ensure accurate recording of payroll expenses and liabilities.
Inventory Management:
- Coordinate with restaurant management to monitor and reconcile inventory levels.
- Implement inventory control procedures to minimize losses and optimize stock levels.
Tax Compliance:
- Prepare and file tax returns (sales tax, payroll tax, income tax) in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Maintain knowledge of tax laws and updates affecting the restaurant industry.
Internal Controls and Compliance:
- Develop and implement internal controls to safeguard financial assets and ensure compliance with company policies and procedures.
- Conduct periodic audits to ensure accuracy and integrity of financial data.
Financial Systems and Processes:
- Recommend improvements to financial systems and processes to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
- Implement accounting software updates and train restaurant staff as needed.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- CPA designation preferred.
- Proven experience as a Restaurant Accountant or in a similar role within the hospitality industry.
- Strong understanding of accounting principles and practices, especially as they apply to restaurants.
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Xero) and Microsoft Excel.
- Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial data and provide insights.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with restaurant management and stakeholders.
Working Conditions:
- Typically works in an office environment within the restaurant.
- May require occasional evening or weekend work during peak periods (e.g., month-end closing, tax filing deadlines).
